Choose CX is appalled by the video footage and reports alleging the dumping of sewage in Dam Se Bos, Knysna, in close proximity to a children's playground.

If these allegations are confirmed, this conduct represents a serious threat to public health, environmental well-being, and the safety of our community's children. The fact that such activity may have occurred next to an area where children play and families gather is deeply disturbing and entirely unacceptable.

What makes these allegations even more troubling is that they emerge barely a week after Knysna Municipality entered into a plea and sentencing agreement relating to multiple environmental law violations arising from sewage pollution and environmental management failures. The municipality publicly committed to corrective action, environmental rehabilitation, improved compliance, and stronger oversight.

Against that backdrop, the community is entitled to ask whether those commitments are being honored in practice.

The health and safety of Knysna's children should never be taken for granted. Residents are entitled to expect that waste disposal is managed lawfully, responsibly, and under strict oversight. Any failure in supervision, compliance, or accountability that allows sewage to be discharged near a children's recreational area demands an immediate and transparent explanation.

The people of Dam Se Bos deserve clear answers regarding who authorised the activity, what oversight measures were in place, whether environmental and health regulations were followed, and what steps are being taken to ensure that no risk has been posed to residents, particularly children.

Choose CX calls on the relevant authorities to conduct an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation. The findings should be made public, and any individual, contractor, official, or authority found to have acted unlawfully or negligently must be held accountable.

Knysna's children, residents, and natural environment deserve better. Public confidence cannot be restored through promises alone; it is restored through accountability, transparency, and demonstrable action.
